Athalin D. Parmenter, 96, passed away at 1:53 am on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Bridge Pointe Health Campus. Athalin was born on October 6, 1922 in Vincennes, the daughter of George William and Carrie Ellen (Coldiron) Menefee. She married Harry B. Parmenter Jr. on June 14, 1949 and he preceded her in death on October 18, 2008.Athalin was a 1942 graduate of Vincennes University and then Indiana University School of Nursing. She was a nurse for Dr. Fredric Spencer for many years and worked at Bob Roberts Children's Hospital in Chicago and also on Ward C at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. Athalin later attended Green Briar Cooking School and taught night classes in cooking at Vincennes University for well over twenty-five years. She also taught cooking classes at several local culinary stores. One of her proudest accomplishments was that she was a Betty Crocker Silver Spoon award winner. She also was a member of the Vincennes Garden Club, an original member of the Herb Club, a member of the Knox County Medical Auxiliary, started the Purely for Pleasure Bunch, was a member of the Alliance Farmers Market, and co-chaired the Holiday Charity Ball for many years.Athalin was a devoted and loving wife to her husband, Harry. She was also devoted to her sons and their families. She wanted to make the world a better place through her love of food. Family and friends often called her for advice on cooking. Athalin loved to have fun. She never met a stranger and was always striking up conversations where ever she went. She loved to make ordinary events into celebrations.Survivors include her sons, Mark Parmenter and his wife Julie of Spencer, Matt Parmenter and his wife Patsy of Harbor Springs, MI, sister, Margaret Jowitt of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Rachel Wasmer and her husband D.J., Sam Parmenter, Will Parmenter and his wife Ashley, Ivy Badini and her husband Brian; great-grandchildren, Fallon Badini, Gracie Renfro, Gwyn Renfro, and Lilly Renfro. Athalin was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry Parmenter, and her sister, Jane Laakman.Friends may visit with Athalin's family on Thursday, October 25, 2018 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm on Thursday, with Rev. George Ford officiating, Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Helping His Hands Food Pantry or the William Henry Harrison House. Goodwin Funeral Home is honored to assist Athalin's family with arrangements.
