It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of William Howard Helderman better known as Bill on March 10, 2024. Bill was born on September 15, 1938, in Knox County and is the son of Louis Howard and Martha M. (Froeschke) Helderman. He married Helen "Elaine" Loesch on July 19, 1986.
Having dedicated over twenty years of his life as a Vincennes City Fireman, Bill served his city with unwavering bravery and selflessness. His commitment to the safety and well-being of others left a lasting impact on the community of Vincennes, where he will be remembered for his heroic acts and dedication to service.
Beyond his role in the fire department, Bill was a master carpenter, using his skillful hands to craft and build many homes, leaving behind a legacy of architectural beauty in the neighborhoods he touched. His passion for tinkering extended to cars and clocks, where he found joy in restoring and repairing these intricate mechanisms.
As friends and family gather to bid farewell to Bill, his memory will be honored in a funeral service that celebrates his life and the mark he left on those around him. May his legacy of service, craftsmanship, and love for his community continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Survivors include his loving wife, Elaine Helderman of Vincennes; daughter, Kim Dunkerly and her husband Kevin of Bruceville; son, Doug Helderman of Knotts Island, NC; his grandchildren, Emilie Helderman and her husband Wesley Sigafoos, Steven Helderman, Morgan Harker, Courtney Macdonald, Shaunessy Dunkerly; his great grandhildren, Summer Boaze, Talan Helderman, Brayden Sigafoos, Olivia Sigafoos and Liam Onken. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Louis Howard and Martha M. Helderman, daughter, Angela Harker, grandson, Kevin Lee Dunkerly, daughter-in-law, Kathleen Helderman and his siblings, Robert Wonning, Loretta Holscher, Carolyn Eakins, Paul Helderman and Reba Fortner.
Graveside services and ceremonies to honor Bill's life will be held at 12:00 pm on Friday, March 15, 2024, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 919 Willow Street, Vincennes, IN. with Pastor Tom Kramer officiating. The Helderman family has requested memorial contributions be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, 601 S. 9th Street, Vincennes, IN 47591 or Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1411 15th Street, Lawrenceville, IL 62439.
