Cameron Keith Like, of Bloomington, Indiana, formerly of Wheatland, Indiana, died peacefully with family by his side on November 27, 2024. Keith was born July 4, 1932, in Wheatland, Indiana and was the son of James Lowell Like and Lucille (Rodarmel) Like.
Not long before his passing, when he was in the hospital emergency room and the doctor asked him what he thought might be wrong, dad responded “TMB.” The doctor asked quizzically, “what is TMB.” Dad responded, “Too many birthdays!” That may give you a sense of his humor and wit even shortly before his passing.
Keith attended Wheatland High School and graduated in 1950. While in high school he played varsity basketball, baseball, and was active in school life serving as Class President all 4 years in high school. Soon after graduation Keith met his future wife, Sharon Lee Smith, who recently moved with her family to small town Wheatland from Indianapolis for her last year of high school.
Keith enlisted in the US Army during the Korean War and was stationed in France part of the time. In June 1955 he attended the 24 hours of Le Mans race, but he and his Army mates moved away from the grandstand before the catastrophic accident that claimed the lives of over 80 spectators near where he stood only a short time before the accident.
Keith was a farmer most of his working career growing crops and livestock. Later he worked as a mechanic for the Knox County Highway Department, and it was from there that he retired.
Keith married Sharon on September 12, 1954, and they celebrated 65 years of marriage prior to her passing. They had a wonderful marriage and made many memories with their four children during their summer camping and travel trips, and the annual Labor Day weekend trip to Palestine, Illinois where they camped each year for well over 40 years. Keith was a patient man as evidenced by taking his family on camping adventures in only a small pickup truck camper. Can you imagine the chaos at times cramming a family of 6 in such a small camper! Of course, after his children were grown, he and Sharon upgraded their camper and continued their summer camping for many years into their retirements.
They instilled their love of travel and adventure onto their children and grandchildren.
Keith was a wonderful father, grandpa and papaw. He is survived by his children, Steve Like and his wife Mary Like, of Phoenix, Arizona, Jeff Like and his wife Renita Like of Richmond, Virginia, Lisa Pagano and her husband Brian Pagano, of Wesley Chapel Florida, and Lance Like and his wife Karen Like of Bloomington, Indiana. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Larry Like, and his beloved wife Sharon.
Not long before he passed, he commented “I’ve got the best family.” As his children, we say “We had the best Dad.”
We would like to thank Gentry Park Senior Living, IU Health Hospice House, and Stonecroft Health Campus for the care provided to Keith since he moved to Bloomington.
