Carl Fields

Rev. Carl Edward Fields, age 86 of Loogootee, Indiana, died at 6:09 am Friday, December 4th, 2020 at his daughter's home in Washington, Indiana surrounded by his children. He was born in Loogootee, Indiana on June 27th, 1934 to the late Charles Eugene Fields and Goldie Mae (Dillon) Fields. He attended Loogootee High School, Union Bible College and Academy in Westfield, Indiana, and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1955.He wed Betty Jean Hawkins in Loogootee, Indiana on June 19, 1955. Marrried and in love for 65 years, Betty passed on November 7th, just 27 days prior to Carl's passing. After his discharge from the Army, Carl and Betty settled in Indianapolis where he became a tool and die apprentice for Acme Machine and Tool Company, followed by working at Stewart Warner Corp. in the re-work shop. In the late 1960's they moved back to Daviess and Martin Counties, where Carl worked as a machinist at Crane Naval Weapons Support Center.In 1962, Carl gave his life to the lord and answered his call to preach. Teaching the word of God was Carl's passion for the next 50 years and included stints pastoring at Walter's Chapel Church of the Nazarene in Franklin, Brownsburg Church of the Nazarene, Epsom Wesleyan Church, Poplar Grove Wesleyan Church in Shoals, and Newberry Church of the Nazarene. Moving to Washington DC in 1983 to support Betty's career at the Pentagon, Carl then pastored the Cornerstone Wesleyan Church in Arlington, Virginia, and First Wesleyan Church of Alexandria before both retired and moved back to Martin County around 2003. In recent years, He enjoyed playing euchre with family and friends, time with his family, fishing, hunting, and collecting and repairing clocks and guns for others. He was also a member of the Loogootee VFW post 9395, Loogootee American Legion Post 120, and was an Ordained Elder for the Indiana South District of the Wesleyan Church.Survivors include children Forrest Edward "Butch" Fields (Cherryl) of Washington, Russell Wayne Fields (Teressa) of Bedford, Daniel Job Fields (Courtney) of Montgomery, Angella Marie Dougherty (Doug) of Washington, grandchildren Shane Fields, Brandon Fields, Audra Miller (Scott), Derek Fields (Malynda), Olivia Fields, Matthew Fields (Alicia), Drew Fields, Aleah Fields, Shayla Fields, Marilyn Stevens (Chris), Bryan Miller, Joseph Miller (Ashley), Alyson Dougherty, Derek Dougherty, Christian Smith and Gracien Smith, 19 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, and brothers Charles Fields of Loogootee and Delbert Fields of Florida. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by sisters LaRosa Fields and Laura Fields Wathan, brothers Buddy Fields and Jackie Fields, and great grandchild, Haven Stevens.Funeral services to celebrate the life of Carl will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Bethany Christian Church, 1139 IN-57, Washington, IN 47501. Friends may visit with Carl's family from 11:00 am until the hour of service at the church on Wednesday and Carl will be laid to rest next to his wife Betty in Sugarland Memory Gardens. Please adhere to social distancing guidlines and wear a mask upon entering the church.
