Carolyn Sutch Blackwell, PhD Carolyn Blackwell went to heaven on May 23, 2016. She was born in Vincennes, Indiana to Etta Mae and John Harold Sutch. Carolyn lived most of her life in Indianapolis. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Wayne; her sister Docia Frey and her husband Bob Horton; her children Don (Marlene), Carla (Jeff), and Mark; and her grandsons Ian, Zachary, Josh and Ben. Carolyn graduated from Lincoln High School in Vincennes. From there she attained her nursing degree at Indiana University. As a registered nurse, Carolyn was head of the neurology floor at Community Hospital in Indianapolis for several years. She decided to enter the field of education and began teaching nursing at Indiana Central (University of Indianapolis). Always looking to expand her knowledge and further her education, she developed an intense interest in Eastern European history and proceeded to attain her masters and doctorate degrees in this area. Her love of teaching led her to the position of history professor at both Butler University and IUPUI. While she ended her career and retired in 2002, she always stayed engaged in historical, political and current events. Carolyn also had a love for the arts and volunteered through the Alliance at the IMA gift shop for many years. She was a voracious reader and appreciated many aspects of history and the arts; all interests that she passed on to her children. She was the glue that held our family together. We will deeply miss her kind nature and her bright smile. Services will be held at the Goodwin Family Funeral Home in Vincennes on Saturday, May 28, with visitation at 11:00 and service starting at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
