Charles Rath

April 1, 1928 — May 19, 2018

Charles W. "Dutch" Rath of Vincennes peacefully passed away May 19th. He was born April 1, 1928 in Elkville, Jackson County, Illinois. He was the son of Phillip and Lura Rath. Dutch married Joyce Lee Sayre, September 10, 1954, in Trinidad, Colorado. Joyce preceded him in death on December 9, 2011. He is survived by two children, Kimberly Rath Modrowski (Thomas Modrowski) of St. John, Indiana and Phillip Sayre Rath (Marianne Hulen) of Vincennes, Indiana; his six grandchildren, Kristin Modrowski (Frank) Kantroski from Valparaiso, Indiana, Kellee Modrowski (Chris) Wyzgowski from St. John, Indiana, Katye Modrowski (Sean) McDonald from Parker, Colorado, Phillip Mitchell (Amanda) Rath of Vincennes, Todd Alan (Laura) Rath of Vincennes, and Jennifer Rath (Cody) Gilbert of Evansville; and his eighteen great grandchildren, Mila, Harry, and Dutch Kantroski , Nina, Frannie, Max, and Beau Wyzgowski, Lucy, Gwen, and Tommy McDonald, Noah and Baylor Rath, Keaton, Campbell, Bristol, and Brecken Rath, Sadie and Greyson Gilbert.Dutch graduated from Elkville Community High School. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served the Armed Forces Special Weapons Group with the 8450 Military Police Battalion. Following his discharge he attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, IL, and later graduated from the Park School of Business in Denver, Colorado.After 32 years of service, Dutch retired from the Federal Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration in Vincennes as a Supervisor of the District Engineering Group. Dutch was an avid golfer, gardener, and a very gentle man. He loved to listen to the sounds of nature with his early morning cup of coffee.Friends may visit with Dutch's family from 4-7 pm on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway. There will be a family graveside service at 9:00 AM on Friday, May 25, 2018 at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery with Rev. Ray Tromley officiating. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Good Samaritan Hospice Program would be appreciated.
