Cledus W. Shepard

April 9, 1945 — June 29, 2024

Cledus Wayne Shepard, born on 9 April 1945 in Daviess County, Indiana to Roy and Lucille Shepard, passed away peacefully on 29 June in Petersburg Indiana after a long and courageous fight with cancer.


Cledus was a life-long resident of Knox County and a proud member of the United Mineworkers of America, having worked for decades as an operator, driller, and shooter at the Old Ben No. 2 coal mine in Pike County. Cledus also served his country during the Vietnam War-era as a member of the Army National Guard’s 3658th Light Maintenance Company from 1965 to 1971.


Cledus was a devoted father and grandfather and deeply enjoyed spending time with his grandkids as often as possible. He will be deeply missed by his loving family. In his free time, he loved collecting Civil War-era firearms and historic artifacts. He was a skilled heavy equipment operator and enjoyed assisting his brothers in their construction business, Shepard Construction.


Cledus is survived by his beloved daughter, Rhonda Johnson (née Rhonda Shepard), son-in-law, AJ Johnson, grandchildren Rachel, Ella, and Vance, and his sister and brothers, Sandy, Samuel, Eugene, Mark, and Aron. Cledus was preceded in death by his brother Terry and his parents, Roy and Lucille.


A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 6, 2024 at 1:00pm at the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Knox County. Friends and family are welcome to attend. Goowin-Sievers Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the care of Cledus.
