Dale W. Courter, 90, passed away at 8:00 p.m. December 31, 2010 at BridgePointe Health Campus.He was born October 29, 1920 in Lawrence County, Illinois to Roscoe & Stella M. (Taylor) Courter.Dale was educated in the public schools of Knox County and was an alumnus of Vincennes University. He was founder on owner of Courter Appliances, Inc., one of the largest retail appliance stores in the Vincennes area in its time. He was consistently a leader in sales of his products, resulting in receiving many awards for his sales. Dale was also co-founder of General Loan and Investment Corporation, a firm that dealt in installment loans and auto financing. Civitan played a big role in Dale's life, in which he was a charter member of the Vincennes Civitan club. He held various offices in Civitan where he was recognized as "Mr. Civitan" in 1960 and Outstanding Citizen of Vincennes in 1965. At the district level he served a Lt. Governor, First Governor and was Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee and held various positions on the International level.Dale was a civic leader in many aspects; he was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on many boards. At Vincennes University, he received the Walter A. Davis award and was named "Community Citizen Extraordinaire and also served on the foundation board and was past-president of the Alumni Association. Other civic duties were serving on the United Fund, Chamber of Commerce, Boy's Club, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, and fraternally in Masonic Lodge#1, Hadi Shrine, and Scottish Rite.He served his country in the United States Army Air Core in World War II.Surviving is his wife, Helen (Hutchinson) Courter, whom he married August 24, 1939, a son, Steven (Brenda) Courter of Sullivan, a daughter, Cindy Calvert of Vincennes, three grandchildren, Angela Fox, Brent Courter, Jeff Courter, and his great grandchildren, Mikayla, Lucas, Kyleigh, Breanna, and Lily.Preceding Dale in death were his parents, a daughter, Sharon Urquhart, an infant son, Jimmy Dale Courter, one sister, and one brother.Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Goodwin Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home
