David Michael Ernst, 72, 2184 N. Balla Machre, Vincennes, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2011 in Greenwood, IN. Born September 30, 1939, in Galion, OH, he was the son of Tony "I.A." and Eunice (Miller) Ernst. Moving to town as a child, he was a lifelong resident of Vincennes.David was a 1957 graduate of Central Catholic High School and attended Vincennes University and Indiana University. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1961-1965. With his father, David owned and operated the Greater Vincennes Shopper from 1968 - 1984 and the Greater Vincennes Publishing Company until 1994. He also was, at one time, co-owner of the Bicknell, Mt. Carmel and Oakland City newspapers. He taught print media advertising and was director of publications at Vincennes University and retired in 2000. David was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where he had served as a Eucharistic minister and lector for many years. As a young man, David was an Eagle Scout. Later he was a member of Jaycees, a 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Elks. He served as secretary of Mt. Calvary Cemetery and as a deputy sheriff under the Luce Administration. He and his wife loved to travel in their motor home and took several trips cross-country. David was a big IU football fan and followed the Hoosiers under Bob Knight in Basketball.David faced adversity with courage and determination. He walked with his faith. He was a loving husband, proud father and grandfather. He did it his way in life and in death.Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Janet (O'Haver) Ernst of Vincennes; daughter, LeAnn Luce and her husband, Steve, of Bloomington; sons, David Ernst, Jr. and Shelly of Clayton, IN, Christopher Ernst and his wife, Anett, of Germany and Anthony Ernst and his wife, Beth, of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Nick Luce, Lauren Luce, Grace Luce, Christopher Glenn, Colin Ernst, Ella Ernst, Victor Ernst, and granddaughter who is due in January 2012; three great-grandchildren; brother, Tom Ernst and his wife, Christina, of Vincennes; and sister, Judy Erny and her husband, Jerry, of Vincennes. Preceding David in death were his parents and brother, Tim Ernst.A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, October 27 at noon at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 803 Main St., with Rev. Dave Fleck officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until noon at the church.
