David Scott Grayson went home to glorious Heaven on February 27, 2024, surrounded by his family & pet (Indigo) at home. Dave was born a firecracker on July 4, 1943, in Vincennes to Ruth (Lemons) and Walter Grayson who preceded him to Heaven. He lived, taught, and loved his life in Vincennes where he was proud to be an Alice, especially his HS class of 1961. After earning degrees from VU and ISU, he taught General Science at Clark Middle School for 38 years. He enjoyed hearing from former students that he was their favorite teacher. He made many memories and lifelong friendships teaching with Paul Couchenour, Mary Miller, Tony Riley, Eric Meyer & Candy Malone, to name a few. During his years at CMS, Dave coached Track and Basketball. He was the Department Chair and Academic Coach. In the community, he taught classes for the Knox County Drug & Alcohol Program and Defensive Driving.
During the summer before his first year of teaching in 1967, he met a young lady from Princeton, IN on a blind date. They married in 1971 and made a life together for 52 years. He is survived by his wife Sharon (Weist), his beloved children, son Andrew (Angelia) Grayson of Evansville, IN, his daughter Kathryn (Todd) Wilhelm of Lawrence, IN, five beautiful grandchildren, Brenden, Elliana, Alexander Grayson, Eva and Adeline Wilhelm.
After retiring from teaching at CMS in 2005, Dave started teaching a Science Methods class at Vincennes University in 2009 thanks to Cheri Osborne, until last December. He taught a total of 52 years. He loved teaching and showing future teachers how to make science fun for their students. Dave was also an avid collector of cars, autographs, knives, and guns. He enjoyed writing poetry and traveling with family and friends on special trips such as Route 66 with Garry Hall, two trips to Europe with groups led by Jim Osborne, and cruises with Sharon and her cousins, Janie Davison and Earl Reeder.
He was honored to receive the LHS Outstanding Alumni Award this last Fall. Dave was an Elder in the Westminster Presbyterian church until it closed but found a new church home at Wabash Community Church and was honored to share his faith in Jesus Christ by teaching a few Sunday School classes.
He earned the Order of Arrow in Boy Scouts, was a member of Gideons, Vincennes Education Association, where he served as vice president and president, and Indiana & National Teachers Associations. Awards received were WZDM Teacher of the Week, Indiana Teacher of the Year semi-finalist, Principal's Award/Students' Choice Award - eight times, Who's Who Among America's Teachers, Principal's" ABCD" Award, and an Excellence in Teaching Award.
The family would like to thank all those who prayed for Dave and his family while he battled cancer. Thank you for the visits, abundance of cards, and a special thanks to Good Samaritan Hospital Diabetes Management, Oncology, and Hospice staff.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elementary Education Department Funds at Vincennes University for future teachers.
As Dr. Richard Beasley would say, "We have not lost our loved one, because we know where he is, he is not lost to us. Till we meet again".
