Delbert Hacker, 87, went to his heavenly home Thursday, October 22, 2020 at 5:07 pm with his family by his side. He was born July 24, 1933 to Clarence and Elnora Hacker.Delbert lived a full and blessed life. He served his country in the Army and started his family while stationed in Germany. He founded Hacker Plumbing and Drilling in 1965, and turned it into a thriving business. The family has traveled extensively and Delbert took every opportunity to make each trip educational. Delbert was very active in his life serving in many capacities at St. John Lutheran Church, including being an elder, trustee, and "Mr. Delbert" to many Vincennes children at the daycare, a title he truly cherished. He was proud of his family and would tell anyone that would listen how smart and wonderful his grandchildren and great grandchildren were. While his time was full of church work, he was also active in the Indiana Water Well Drillers Association, serving them as President and Secretary at various times. A defining moment in his life was receiving a heart transplant twenty-five years ago. He promised God to be a faithful servant if he was allowed to live thru that surgery, and he kept his word! Many will remember Delbert as the man about town, tooling around in his side by side, frequently with things like trees and pallets being dragged behind. Family would receive calls from concerned citizens saying, "I saw your dad…." To which we would respond, "don't want to know" because there was nothing we could do to stop him. He loved passing out skittles to children, giving home grown vegetables away, and introducing his grandbabies to his favorite fruit watermelon. He was constantly listening to country music and loved to charm the ladies. He was called the urban farmer as he raised cattle, goats, and the solitary llama. He was also privileged to participate in the Honor Flight 2018 with escort/friend Alan Mackey.Surviving are his children Rebecca Phillips and her husband Ken, Tim Hacker and his wife Anita, and Sara Atwood, all of Vincennes; his grandchildren Jennifer Meadows and her husband Tony, Jason Phillips and his wife Angie, Kelly Jones and her husband Andrew, Andy Hacker and his wife Loni, Kelsie Hacker and her companion Nick Dismukes, Bailey Hacker and her fiance Calvin Powell, Jacob Atwood, and Hannah Atwood; along with his great grandchildren Mattye Meadows, Camdyn Meadows, Gracie Phillips, and Brody Philips; sister's, Faye Hess and her husband Tom and Julia Agee and her husband Larry. Delbert was preceded in death by his wife Mary Hacker, his son Mark Hacker, son-in-law Gus Atwood, parents, Clarence and Elnora, sisters Vernelda Ellerman, Hilda Purcell and brother, Marvin Hacker.Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, October 26, 2020 at St. John Lutheran Church, 707 N. 8th St., Vincennes, IN with Rev. Ron Maxwell officiating. Friends may visit with the Hacker family from 11:00 am until the hour of service time at the church. Delbert will be laid to rest next to his wife in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and gifts the Hacker family respectfully request donations be made to St. John Lutheran Maintenance Fund as that was Dad's area of expertise and passion.
