Donald R. Cosby, 91, passed away at 2:34 pm on April 20, 2023 at Eastgate Manor with his family at his side. Don was born on May 30, 1931 in Washington and is the son of Edward and Ruby (McCafferty) Cosby. He married Frances Patricia Howard on August 4, 1953. Don was a 1949 graduate of Washington High School where he was a four year letter winner as a student manager for the Hatchet basketball team. After graduation Don went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force Don returned home and began working for Palmer Electric. He then went on and had a successful career as an Insurance salesman winning numerous awards for his outstanding service. Don was the Daviess County Assessor for several years and ran for Washington City Mayor in 1976. He was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church and served as a Deacon for many years. Don was also a member of the American Legion, Jaycees, was the Daviess County Historian where he wrote three books on local history, and was one of the founders of Sugarland Memory Gardens. Survivors include his wife Patricia Cosby of Washington; his children, daughter, Lynn Smith and her husband Mark of Washington; sons, Tim Cosby and his wife Kim of Washington, Kelley Cosby and his wife Tammy of Washington, Matt Cosby and his wife Kerri of Ellettsville; fourteen grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. Don is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Ruby Cosby; sisters, Helen Ellis, Mary Cosner, and brothers Paul and Gene Cosby. Friends may visit with Don's family from 4-8 pm on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at First Baptist Church, 100 E. Walnut St., Washington, IN. Don's funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, April 24, 2023 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Baxter officiating. Don will be laid to rest in Sugarland Memory Gardens.
