George Mullens

October 29, 1924 — August 9, 2012

George M. Mullens, age 87, of 871 Emison Ave., Vincennes, passed onto heaven Thursday night August 9th, 2012 at Good Samaritan Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Bruceville, IN on October 29th, 1924 to Riley "Ty" and Margaret "Maggie" (Arnott) Mullens. George was the fifth child born into a remarkable family of 13 children, 8 sons and 5 children. His father was a hard worker who taught his kids to plant gardens and play sports. George's dad played semi-pro baseball and was nicknamed "Ty Cobb." All the children were born at home and grew up in the Bruceville United Methodist Church. His special mom made homemade bread every other day, made pies (chocolate ones especially for George and two siblings) and shared her deep faith. His mom and her family came to America from Scotland when Maggie was just a young girl. Many of the children were named for relatives; and George's middle name "Mayfield" was after the doctor who delivered him.As is true for so many of the "greatest generation," George and four siblings proudly served our country during WWII. George entered the Army at age 18 on March 26, 1943 and was discharged March 26, 1946. He served in the European Theatre (Germany, France, and Austria). He was part of the 798th A.A.A. U.S. Army. They were a part of the Allies' successful efforts in liberating (freeing) the Dachau concentration camp. George often said "By the grace of God" he and his siblings returned home safely. An additional three siblings served in the Korean Era and the Vietnam Era. Once home, he finished his senior year at Bruceville High School with his younger brother. Post World War II he and his father and brother did construction work. George joined the L.I. U.N.A. in 1949. He occasionally told of different places he helped build or remodel like Good Samaritan Hospital and the old Lincoln High School. He spent many dates with his sweetheart by attending services at North United Methodist Church in Vincennes where he and Jean (Sibert) were married on November 23, 1950 by Rev. Frank Little. His better-half (as he introduced her) shared a wonderful life together before she died January 27, 2012. Also preceding him in death were his parents, toddler brother, Riley Jr.; sisters, Mary ,Betty, and Shirley Mullens; brothers John, Steve, Jim, and Jerald Mullens; a stillborn daughter, Kathy Jean Mullens; a stillborn great-niece; and his teenage nephew Jerry Ray Kolehouse who died 31 years ago on August 9, 1981.Surviving are his daughter, Marsha Mullens; sons Mark (Lynn) Mullens, Scott (Janet) Mullens; grandchildren, Mindy (Derek) Williams, Matthew Mullens, Andrew Mullens, all of Vincennes. His brothers, Robert "Bob" (Lucy) of Benson, Arizona; William "Bill" (Donna) Mullens of Vincennes; sisters Norma (Charles) Crouch of Bicknell, Agnes (Donald "Bert") Kolehouse of Vincennes; sisters
