Gerald Ray Lawyer, 86, of Washington, IN, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2019, at Memorial Hospital in Jasper, IN."John Deere Jerry" worked at Washington Implement, both as a mechanic and in the parts department. It was there that he received his nickname, because of the way he answered the telephone. In 1979, he started work at Indianapolis Power and Light in Petersburg. He retired as a Utility Shift Operator in 1998. Jerry was a charter member of the Daviess County Rural Water System and served as a board chairman. For over 50 years Jerry could be found in the cattle ring at the 4-H Fair assisting members as a ring man. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. One of his greatest honors was being on Honor Flight EVV8, and he enjoyed being around the other veterans on that flight. Jerry served as an Army sergeant during the Korean War era.Surviving are his wife, Eleanor (Stuckey) Lawyer, who he married January 2, 1956; sons, Allan Lawyer and his companion, Debra Brewster, of Amenia, NY; Steven Lawyer and wife, Polly, of Elnora, IN; sister, Beverly Rose Harner of Washington, IN; brother, Charles (Linda) Lawyer of Seymour, IN; 6 grandsons, Brian Ray Lawyer and wife, Erin, of Simpsonville, SC, Isaac Lawyer of Lake Placid, NY, Blake Lawyer and wife, Katelyn, of Shelbyville, KY, Blane Lawyer and wife, Hillary, of Washington, IN, Brandt Lawyer and wife, McKenzie, of Bloomington, IN, and Braden Lawyer of Evansville, IN; 6 great-grandchildren, Jared, Lucas, Zachary, Tinley, Preston, and Magnolia Elynnor Lawyer as well as several nieces and nephews.Born November 12, 1933, in Washington, IN, he was the son of Albert T. and Mary (Cutshall) Lawyer, Sr. His parents, his sisters, Imogene Kirchoff and Joyce LeFevre; twins Joseph and JoAnn Lawyer; and his brothers, Albert T. Jr., and Fred Lawyer, preceded him.Friends may visit with Jerry's family from 3:00 - 8:00 on Wednesday, at the Goodwin - Sievers Funeral Home. His funeral will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, at 10:30, with Pastors Blake Lawyer, Phillip Richardson, and Dean Stuckey officiating.
