Grace Johnson

Grace L. (Whipple) Johnson of Evansville (formerly of Owensville, IN) departed this life June 17, 2023. Born August 6, 1929, in Indianapolis, IN to Willard C. Whipple and Roberta F. King. Grace graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, IN in 1947. She earned her bachelor's and master's degree in library science and english from Indiana University. Grace taught English and was a Librarian. Over her teaching career, she taught in Central and Southern Indiana, retiring from New Harmony School. While attending Indiana University she met the love of her life William M. Johnson. Grace and Bill married July 21, 1950, in Nashville, Indiana. She was a member of Owensville United Methodist Church. Grace loved playing cards and games especially at holiday gatherings. She also enjoyed celebrations of birthdays and the holidays, where she could socialize, sing songs and just have her family and friends surround her. Grace and Bill have four children, Braden R. (Brenda) Johnson, Rebecca S. (Rick) Klass, Elizabeth A. (Mike) Roop, Amy G. (Kelly) Maurer; grandchildren, Carl Johnson, Bettie Johnson, Andrea (Rob) Mountain, Ryan Rubrecht, Kyle Rubrecht, Rachael (Mike) McCloskey, Blake (Brittany) Maurer, Dane (Erika) Maurer; seventeen great grandchildren; brother Robert (Hellen) Whipple and her nephews, Jeff (Mary) Whipple and Dan Whipple. Grace is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Bill in 2012. A Celebration of Life Service for Grace will be held at a later date and Grace will be laid to rest next to her husband Bill in Maumee Cemetery. The Johnson family has requested memorial contributions may be made to Owensville United Methodist Church and the Humane Society in her honor.
