Gwendolyn A. Steyskal, 82, of Washington, passed away at 8:30 pm Friday, November 22, 2019 at Select Specialty Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.She was born June 22, 1937 in Hurley, New Mexico to Raymond and Peggy (Menard) Steyskal.Gwen retired after 42 years from Daviess Community Hospital as a nurse and held many titles and received several awards while working there. She loved teaching nursing and created the telemetry program at DCH. In her last years working she worked in the ICU and loved to pray and sing with her patients.Gwen is a graduate of Hurley High School and she received her RN from Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso,TX and BSNE from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio,TX.Her memberships included the Christ United Methodist Church, April Deb's Extension Homemakers and 4-H, Indiana Nurses Association, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Daviess County Board of Health, Business and Professional Women's Club, the Optimist Club and Southwest Indiana Walk to Emmaus community. Gwen had served as president of the Daviess County Unit of the American Cancer Society and Lay delegate for District III. She helped organize the first Relay for Life in Daviess County and the first community health fairs.As a Red Cross nurse, she taught CPR classes for many years and she loved serving as a volunteer chaplain at Daviess Community Hospital.In her free time Gwen enjoyed, fishing, camping, woodworking, traveling, and had a love for Christian Music, eagles and her dog Gertie.Surviving are a nephew Dean Little, and a niece Rhonda VanDran, both of Silver City, New Mexico; five great nieces and nephews; and her longtime friends and sisters-in-heart, Jan Wahl and Judy Lowe, both of Washington.Preceding her in death were her parents; her brother Raymond "Butch" Steyskal; and a sister Kathryn Little.Funeral services will be held at Christ United Methodist Church on Thursday December 5, 2019 11:00am with Jerald E. Turner officiating. Burial will be held at a later time in New Mexico. Visitation will be December 5 from 9am-11am at the church. Daviess Community Hospital Nursing Honor Guard will stand with her at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or your choice of charity.
