Harold Eugene (Gary) Allen, age 88, Vincennes, passed away April 5, 2011 at his home.He was born on February 4, 1923, in Lafayette, to the late Harold Allen and Ada Yundt Allen. He attended grade school and high school at Stockwell and graduated in 1947 from Purdue University with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Economics. From 1943 to 1946, Mr. Allen served in the United States Army during World War II, and was stationed in the Philippines. He enlisted as a private and was promoted to second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery.In his early years, Harold spent 11 years in 4-H club work, including 5 years as a Junior Leader.After graduation from Purdue, he worked as Farm Manager for Opekasit Farm Management, supervising farms in south central Ohio and northern Kentucky, totaling nearly 8000 acres.Harold joined Producers Livestock Association in October 1955 in the cattle department at Marion, Ohio. He became manager at the Vincennes Producers Livestock Association in 1958, remaining in that position until his retirement in 1986.In retirement, he worked with Meals on Wheels for 15 years.An avid supporter of Purdue University Athletics, Harold had been a member, along with his wife Helen, of the John Purdue Athletic Boosters Club, attending home football games at Purdue for many years.He has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Vincennes since 1958.He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Ann Farrell.Harold is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen Mae Howarth Allen; a sister, Phyllis Rusk of Lafayette; a daughter, Sandra (Don) Ernst of Indianapolis; two sons, James (Minnie) Allen of Florida and Kenneth (Lesa) Allen of Kentucky; 10 grandchildren, Steve Ernst of California; Brenda Ernst-Guzman, Pat (Rebecca) Farrell, Kerry (Matt) Abdullah of Indianapolis, J.R. (Juliette) Allen and Justin Allen of Nashville, Tennessee; Tim Farrell of New York; Michelle (Jamie) Byrum and Jennifer Allen of Ohio; Scott (Joanna) Allen of Louisville, Kentucky; and 10 great-grandchildren.Visitation will be held Friday, April 8, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway St, Vincennes, Indiana.Services will be Saturday, April 9 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. George Ford officiating.Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. in Plainview Cemetery in Colfax, Indiana on Saturday.
