Horace Foncannon

Horace "Hoss" A. Foncannon, Jr., 90, of Vincennes, IN, passed away March 31, 2019, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital.Horace was born December 24, 1928 in Vincennes, IN, to Horace and Vergie Foncannon. A 1947 graduate of Lincoln High School, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree and his law degree from Indiana University. Following his time at IU, Horace served as a sergeant in the United States Army.Returning home from service, he joined his father's law firm in 1954. His son Scott practiced law with his father from 1978 until 1990. Horace was a 50 year member and past- president of the Knox County Bar Association, and was also a member of the Indiana and American Bar Associations. He was elected Justice of the Peace for three terms.Horace was president and C.E.O. of the Home Federal Savings and Loan for twenty years, and served on the board for almost 40 years. He was also involved with many boards and committees of the Savings and Loan League of Indiana.Community involvement was an important part of his life. His service to Vincennes included the Vincennes University Foundation; the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Board; the Vincennes Historical and Antiquarian Society, of which he had been a governor; a 30 year member of the YMCA Board of Directors and a former board president; the Knox County Board of Health; Vincennes Water Dept. Board; Vincennes City Cemetery Board; Vincennes Board of Zoning Appeals; a 50 year member and past president of the Salvation Army Advisory Board; and many boards and committees of the First United Methodist Church, during his long time membership there.Horace was a Past Exalted Ruler of the Vincennes Elks Club. He also belonged to the 40et8, Harmony Society, and the "Do Nothing" Club. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion. Golfing and watching the Hoosiers and Cincinnati Reds were some of his favorite activities.His many awards included the 1990 Walter Davis Citation from Vincennes University, and the 1997 Lincoln High School Distinguished Alumni Award. In 2005, he received the Spirit of 76 Award.Surviving are his children, Lisa Kilmartin and Robert Foncannon and his wife, Kris, all of Newburgh, IN; his sister, Linda Tucker of Vincennes, IN; his grandchildren, Ryan Foncannon and his wife, Tara, Heather Corey and her husband, Mark, and Zachary, Alexander, and Reece Foncannon; his great-grandchildren, Mason, Kobie, and Baiden Corey; and his special friend, Joan Chambon. Horace was preceded by his parents; his wife of 49 years, Nancy (Stevenson) Foncannon; his son, Scott Foncannon and his sisters, Jane Smith and Virginia Reel.Friends may visit with Horace's family from 4:00 - 7:00 on Tuesday, at the Goodwin Funeral Home. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, at the First United Methodist Church, at 11:00. Entombment will follow at the Tower Mausoleum in Memorial Park Cemetery. Afterwards, there will be a wake for family and friends at the Harmony Society.The family wishes that no flowers be sent. Donations may be made to the YMCA or the Salvation Army.
