John “Jack” Allen Parsons passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2023, in Sebring, Florida at the age of 79. He was born on October 13, 1943, in Mansfield, Ohio; the son of Clyde E. and Eleanor W. (Lewis) Parsons. Jack married Judy Clouser in February 1965. Jack attended Ontario High School in Ontario, OH, Heidelberg College in Tiffin, OH and Ball State University in Muncie, IN, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He proudly served his country in the U.S Army from 1966-1970, with 3 of those years stationed in Japan in the US Army Security Agency.
For 47 years he lived in Vincennes, IN, of which 36 years he taught as a professor in the Earth Science Department at Vincennes University, co-founding the Earth Science Club, and leading field camps for his college students. In 2009 he retired as Chair of the Earth Science and Agricultural departments at Vincennes University. Jack enjoyed traveling to all 50 states and several foreign countries before moving to Sebring, FL in 2020. He also enjoyed golf, reading, playing cards, coaching Little League Baseball, being a Cub Scout leader, watching NASCAR and IU Basketball. He was a very upbeat person, respected educator, and devoted family man.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 58 years, Judy (Clouser) Parsons; daughter – Tammy Guerrettaz (Bernie) of Bloomington, IN; son – Chris Parsons of The Woodlands, TX; grandchildren – Nicholas Guerrettaz (Jessica) of Vincennes, IN, Olivia Guerrettaz of Bloomington, IN, Sydney Parsons of The Woodlands, TX, Madeline Parsons of The Woodlands, TX; sister – Judy Ingle (Mark) of Farmland, IN. Also surviving are a niece, nephew, a host of cousins and past students to mourn his passing. Jack was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. with a service at 3:00 P.M at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home at 524 Broadway St. Vincennes, IN 47591. Burial will be Sunday, October 29, 2023, at 12 noon in the Buena Vista Cemetery, 5454 W. 300 S. Farmland, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to: Knox County 4-H, 4259 N.
