James Abel

James D. "Jim" Abel, 78, passed away at 12:25 pm on March 26, 2020 at Lodge of the Wabash Nursing Home. Jim was born on December 3, 1941 in Shoals, IN the son of Howard. D. and Betty (Qualkenbush). He married Roberta "Birdie" Barksdale on March 6, 1981.Jim worked in service for Hoosier Gas and later Sigeco for many years until his retirement. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church and was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing, bowling and hunting. Jim was also a member of the American Legion and an avid St. Louis Cardinal and I.U. fan. More importantly though, Jim enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in any sporting event they were in.Survivors include his wife, Birdie Abel of Vincennes; his children, Mike Sheren and his wife Sherry of Bruceville, B.J. Helderman of Vincennes, Jeff Abel and his wife Judy of Vincennes, Shannon Abel and his wife Chrissy of Westfield; his sblings, Jerry Abel and his wife Gladys of Peoria, IL, Roger Abel and his wife Debbie of Vincennes, Janice Fehlinger and her husband Doug of Vincennes, Greg Abel and his wife Gaye of Vincennes, Kevin Abel and his wife Lorrie of Vincennes, Angie Hobson and her husband Rick of Jasper, Cindy Wright of Vincennes; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dwain and Brian Abel and his brother-in-law, Dave Wright.Private graveside services will be held on Monday at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery with Rev. Dale Biehl officiating. Any one interested will be able to watch the service live on Goodwin Funeral Home Facebook page and you will be notified when it goes live.
