James H. Yochum

June 13, 1930 — March 19, 2024

James H. Yochum, of Decker Chapel, passed away peacefully at his residence in Fishers, IN on March 19, 2024. He was born on June 13, 1930, in Decker, to the late John and Martha (Oexmann) Yochum.


Jim was a graduate of Decker High School in 1948. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University in education. Upon graduation, Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served in Florida, Texas and Alaska. After an honorable discharge from the service, he returned home to teach high school and complete his master’s degree to become a school principal. He later also completed his Education Specialist, Ed.S. Jim married Emogene Smith on July 20, 1957. Emogene preceded Jim in death in 2023 after being happily married for over 65 years. They were blessed with three daughters, Clara Yochum, Sherry (Mike) Mitsch and Kelly Yochum; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Jim enjoyed his career of teaching generations of students in several schools around southern Indiana before retiring in 1991 from South Knox School Corporation.


After retiring, his friends and family benefited from his prolific garden and his talent as a woodworker and furniture maker. Jim and Emogene were also avid euchre players, especially with their church group. He was devoted to his family, receiving special joy from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024 from 10:00 am - 11:30 am at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home. The funeral service will start promptly at 11:30 following the visitation with Pastor Nathan Rastl officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park.


Jim was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder for many years. Memorial donations can be made in his honor to Worship Anew care of the church in lieu of flowers. Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the care of James.
