James Spencer

James R. Spencer, 68, of Vincennes, IN, passed away December 29, 2019, at Good Samaritan Hospital.Jim attended Vincennes Community Schools, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1969. At Lincoln, he ran track and played on the football team, and was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.After high school, Jim graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in landscape architecture. He owned Spencer Landscaping in Vincennes from 1976 to 1985. Jim then worked in Atlanta, GA and Tallahassee, FL, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in both cities. He returned to Vincennes and worked at Perk - A - Lawn Gardens.Well known for his intricate design of many types of landscaping, including formal Japanese, English, herbal, and natural, he was active in educating the community in the importance of environmental awareness and creating green spaces throughout Vincennes. Jim was a member of the Audubon Society.Jim enjoyed snow skiing, fishing, cooking, music, and drawing.Born July 24, 1951, in Vincennes, IN, he was the son of Dr. Frederic and Virginia (Anderson) Spencer. Surviving is his fiance' and life partner, Kathy McCreary; his children, Elizabeth Alden and her husband, Thaddaeus of Vincennes, IN and Ryan Anderson Spencer of Vincennes, IN; his brothers, Steve Spencer and his wife, Sandy, of Greenwood, IN, and Mike Spencer and his wife, Paula, of Martinsville, IN; his brother-in-law, Paul Couchenour; his grandchildren, Elliot, Ava, and Layla Alden; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and his dog, Bubby. Jim was preceded by his parents and his sister, Ann Couchenour. He will be missed.Friends may visit with Jim's family from 4:00 - 7:00 on Friday, at Goodwin Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at the funeral home, on Saturday, at 11:00. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.Donations may be made to Helping His Hands.
