J. Max Steckler died peacefully August 1, 2016 just five days shy of his 97th birthday. He was born August 6, 1919 in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. He was a World War II Veteran and successful farmer in Indiana. Max was married to Kay for sixty- seven years and is survived by his four daughters, Mary Ward, Susanne Miller, Maxine DiPietro and Jane Schmitz, ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.He was a member of several organizations and charity groups including the K of C for seventy-eight years and the Catholic Faith all of his life. He also enjoyed animals, gardening and woodworking which we all benefited from due to his generous nature.Max loved being with people and had a great sense of humor. Even at the end of his life when communication was difficult, he still could make people laugh with his one liners.Regardless of his difficulties, he would say, "I do what I have to do" and continued to be very appreciative to the very end. We love you Dad and miss you.Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 10-11 am at Old Cathedral Catholic Church, 205 Church Street, Vincennes, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am with the Rev. David Fleck celebrating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery where the All Weather Firing Squad will conduct military rites. Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway has been entrusted with Max's final arrangements. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul.
