James Utt

January 20, 1935 — December 30, 2011

James L. Utt, of 391 S. Anson Rd., Vincennes, passed away on Dec. 30, 2011 at Good Samaritan Hospital. Jim was a lifelong farmer, and a member of the New Covenant Church in Monroe City, IN. He served as an elder, deacon, and treasurer at church, and was a former member of the Palmyra Presbyterian Church, where he had also served as an elder. One of the founding fathers of the Palmyra Township Fire Dept., Jim had been the fire chief there, as well as a 1st and 2nd class firefighter, and a master firefighter and instructor. He was a school bus driver for the South Knox School Corp. for 35 years. Jim served on the board for the Lord's Warehouse, the Soil & Water Conservation District Board for 34 Years, and was a member of the Knox County RC & D, and the Fritchton Alumni Association. He was a sergeant in the active Army Reserves for 15 years. Born Jan. 20, 1935 in Vincennes, Jim was the son of Hiram E. & Catherine M. (Gerkin) Utt. His parents preceded him. Surviving is his wife, Jan (Hawkins) Utt , whom he married July 15, 1956; sons Jerry (Terri) Utt and Tim (Nancy) Utt, both of Vincennes; daughter Tammy (Mark) Bosecker of Vincennes; brother, Bennie Utt of Vincennes; grandchildren J.R. Utt, Lori Beth Brown, Sara Abel, Toni Utt, Timmy Utt, and April Smith; and great-grandchildren Lillie Smith, Isabelle Smith, Ethan Abel, Kenzie Abel, Levi Brown, Tyler Brown, and Kennedy Utt. The family will receive friends on Monday from 4:00 -8:00 at Goodwin Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held there on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012 at 10:30 with Rev. George Ford officiating. Interment will follow in Upper Indiana Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Lord's Warehouse, Soil and Water Conservation, or the Knox County RC & D.
