John E Buchhorn

John Buchhorn passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 21, 2023. He was born on November 27, 1945 to Otto and Lucille (Rehwald) Buchhorn.

John graduated from Decker High School in 1964 excelling on the basketball court scoring 42 points in a single game. He went on to graduate from Murray State University majoring in physical education and history. He married Julie (Chambers) of Olney IL in March 1971.

He was a retired melon farmer and dedicated member of St Peter Lutheran Church serving as President and youth basketball coach.

John was an avid sports lover and golfer clinching two hole-in-ones. His love of sports was only matched by his love of watching local high school basketball and indulging in Bobe’s Pizza.

He is survived by his children Dr Anna (Kerry) Ankenbrand, Jonathan (Christa) Buchhorn, Elizabeth (Matt) Shatto; grandchildren Noah and Grace Ankenbrand; nephews Lonnie Dardeen and Lance Dardeen. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sister Phyllis (Larry) Dardeen.

In remembering John, let’s celebrate his life, his victories on the court, perfect shots on the golf course, the bountiful harvest from his fields, and the warmth of his presence in the pews of St Peters.

Friends may visit with John’s family from 11 a.m. until the hour of service at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at St Peter Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Pastor Nathan Rastl officiating.
