Rev. John (Johnny) Edward Hinkle, Jr., 80, of Arlington Heights, IL passed away at his home on Thursday, August 28, 2014.John was born in Decker, IN, on October 14, 1933, to the late John and Lela (Todd) Hinkle. John graduated as salutatorian of his high school class in 1951 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Taylor University in 1955, Bachelor of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological School in 1959, Master of Arts from Northwestern University in 1960, and his Doctorate from Northwestern University in 1970.John was a loving husband and father as well as a Minister, Missionary, Pastoral Counselor, Psychologist, and Professor. John served as a missionary for the United Methodist Church to the Philippines 1960-1964 establishing a church in Iligan City, Philippines. He was a member of the faculty at Garrett-Evangelical from 1972-1999. He served on the Advisory Committee for Psychological Assessment for the national United Methodist Church's Division of Ordained Ministry from 1980-2000. He maintained a private practice of psychology focusing on the assessment of ministerial candidates for over 40 years.John is survived by his wife of 25 years, Martha; four children: Gregory Hinkle and his wife Valerie, of Goshen, IN; Deborah of Arlington Heights, IL; Orval Kenneth of Albuquerque, NM; and John of Buffalo Grove, IL; two step-children: Michael Nugent and his wife Karin of Long Grove, IL; Mark Nugent and his wife Rachel of Arlington Heights, IL; and seven grandchildren. John is also survived by his seven brothers and sisters: Harlan of Brownsburg, IN; Jerry of Vincennes, IN; Phoebe of Vincennes, IN; Todd of Indianapolis, IN; Nancy of Indianapolis, IN; Roger of Milwaukee, WI; and Jack of Vincennes, IN.A viewing will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at the Community United Methodist Church in Vincennes, IN from 9:00 AM-10:30 AM with the funeral and burial to follow.
