John T. Newell, 93, of Vincennes, IN, passed away at his home, June 25, 2016.John farmed with his family in Knox County, IN and Lawrence Co., IL, for many years. He was the co-owner of Newell Brothers Machine Shop through the 1950's, and of Newell Brothers Manufacturing until 1966. From 1972 - 1985, John was a co-owner of M&T Coal Company.In 1985, John semi-retired and enjoyed golfing, and church activities at St. John's United Church of Christ. He was a life member of the Elks. John continued to help with farming and managing the farm holdings.A 1940 graduate of Lawrenceville High School, he was proud to have attended Plank Road grade school. In 1949, he married Kristene R. Simms on May 5th, 1949. They celebrated 67 years together.Born August 12th, 1922, in Allison Prairie, Il, he was the son of John T. Newell, Sr. and Katie (Powell) Newell. His parents; sisters, Anna Mary Cunningham, Marjorie Cunningham, Vera Canaday, and Katherine Leighty; and brothers, Clint, George, Karl, William, and Robert Newell preceded him.Surviving is his wife, Kristene (Simms) Newell; children, Carla Schmidt and her husband, Eric, of Carmel, IN, Jeffrey Newell and his wife, Janet, of Vincennes, and Stephen Newell of Vincennes; a sister-in-law, Edith Simms; grandchildren, Emily Newell of Vincennes and friend Ryan Potter of San Francisco, CA, Dean Newell and fiance' Ashley Scott of Bloomington, IN, Amber Newell of New York City, NY, and Blake Newell of Dallas, TX; and several nieces and nephews.Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 - 11:30 on Wednesday, at Goodwin Funeral Home. His funeral service will begin at 11:30 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Upper Indiana Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, 520 S. 7th Street, Vincennes, IN 47591 or St. John's United Church of Christ, 606 N. 5th Street, Vincennes, IN 47591.
