Joseph A. Halter, 89, of Colonial Assisted Living, Vincennes, passed away at Good Samaritan Hospital at 5:30 am Friday, November 20, 2015. He was born on December 26, 1925 in Knox County to Joseph N. and Anna (Recker) Halter. Joe was a well known farmer in Lawrence County, Illinois, having farmed all of his working years. He served as a Director of the Beaver Pond Drainage District and had an active role in the formation of the Consolidated Drainage District of which he also served as a Director. Joe also was an incorporator of the Wabash Valley Bank which was formed in 1982. The bank was later bought out by Citizens Bank and then was bought out by Fifth Third Bank. He served as Secretary of the bank board for many years. A member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, he served on its finance board, served as an elder, and was active in many church organizations and activities. Surviving is his wife of 66 years, Georgia Ann (Evans) Halter, whom he married on August 22, 1949; two sons, Michael J. Halter of Clarkston, WA, and Mark D. Halter of Denver, CO; a son-in-law, Andrew Stefanik; a sister, Rita Holscher; two grandchildren, Amanda and Drew (Andrew) Stefanic of Wheaton, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents; one daughter, Lynne A Stefanik; four brothers, Henry, Edmond, George, and Clarence, and three sisters, Cecelia Yochum, Mary Holscher, and Ann Hess. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Gardner-Brockman funeral home with Rev. Ron Maxwell officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
