Joseph Vieck

January 23, 1928 — March 23, 2021

Joseph M. "Joe" Vieck Sr. of Vincennes, Indiana, passed away at home on March 23, 2021, after a short battle with cancer. He was the middle of nine children of Christopher and Cecelia (VanLaningham) Vieck. He was born on January 23rd, 1928.Joe was a lifelong Catholic devoted to his faith and family. He was a member of St. Thomas and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Churches; he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was introduced to his future wife, Alberta "Butch" Voges, by their sisters, Jeanne and Loretta. They were married on March 26, 1951, at St. Paul in Tell City, Indiana.Joe proudly served his country during the Korean War. In the time he served, he was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. He was a member of the VFW and the 40 et 8 Club.Following his discharge, he returned to the farm in Vincennes. He loved farming, always striving to try new technology or different crops. He served on the agricultural board at Purdue University for many years. His strawberries were enjoyed by many over the generations. In spite of his mother's doubts, his interest in potato production opened up this industry to southern Indiana. He was active in the Indiana and National Vegetable Growers Associations and National Potato Promotion Board. He was presented with The Master Farmer award by Prairie Farmer Magazine and Purdue University in 1998.He was always willing to host all the holiday gatherings and enjoyed playing cards and would play anytime.Joe's ethics of service continued at the local level. He was elected as a Knox County Commissioner in 1973. Later, he served as a Vincennes City Councilman. He was a member of the Good Samaritan Hospital board, the United Federal Savings Bank Board and a founding member of the Lincoln Trail Hospice board.Joe is survived by his children, J.M. Vieck and his wife Patty, Ann Piper and her husband Steve, Mark Vieck and his wife Diane, Susan Naab and her husband Mark, Hugh Vieck and his wife Jennifer, and Patrick Vieck and his wife Mindy; grandchildren, Hillary Vieck, Nick (Kena) Vieck, Allison (Chris) VanOrsdoll, Jodi (Alan) Wilber, Michael (Tammie) Piper, Patrice (Mike) Hidde, Susan (Andy) Theising, Cole (fiancee, Kara Wehmiller) Vieck, Joel Naab, Sidney Vieck, Andrea Vieck, Baron Vieck, and step-granddaughter Andrea (Jason Smitha) Lewis; great-grandchildren, Mason and Jackson Vieck, Carter and Lincoln Hairston, Elise, Lawson, Ava Grace, and Lydia VanOrsdoll, Aven Wilber, Ellie Piper, Margaret and Elizabeth Theising and Caroline and Zoey Hidde; brothers Maurice Vieck, and Dr. Charles Vieck.Preceding him in death were his wife, Butch, in 1972, his parents, and his siblings, Agnes Ottensmeyer, Rita Primus, Richard Vieck, Rev. Hilary Vieck, Rev. Larry Vieck, Loretta Holl, and grandson Jonathan Vieck, and step-grandson Brad Lewis.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Old Cathedral Catholic Church on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 1:00 pm with Archbishop Paul Etienne, Rev. Bernie Etienne, Rev. Zach Etienne, Rev. Gary Kaiser, Rev. Jose Thomas, Rev. Simon Natta, Deacon Earl Ruppel, Deacon Cletus Yochum, and Rev. Tony Ernst officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, March 26, 2021 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Parish, or the Indiana Military Museum in Vincennes.
