Kenneth Charley

Kenneth "Kenny" A. Charley, 93, of Oaktown, passed away at 3:10 a.m. on Monday, January 10, 2011. He was born September 28, 1917, in Oaktown, the son of Crawford and Nellie (Love) Charley. Kenny retired from the United States Postal Service in 1978 and then served as the Knox County Veteran Service Officer for nine years. He had been a member of the Oaktown town board where he served as president and was an Oaktown volunteer fireman for over forty years having served as fire chief for numerous years. He served his country during World War II and Korea in the United States Navy as a chief petty officer, signalman, quarter master and deep sea diver. He appeared, during his Navy days, in the movies, Navy Bound, Battle Cry and Away on Boats. He was a member of Oaktown United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 73, 40 et 8 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also served on the executive board of Wish Upon a Star for many years and was one of Its founding members. He was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen (Severe) Charley, whom he married on December 3, 1954, of Oaktown; daughters, Linda (Jim) Owens of Vincennes, Sandi (Jim) Huebner of Vincennes, Cheryl Tackett of Oaktown, Cindy (Mike) White of Logansport and Chris (Pat) Stoffers of Ellettsville; brothers, Lewis Charley of Sellersburg and Loren Charley of New Albany; sister, Betty May Smith of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Kenny Owens, Debbie Riggle, Tracy Sparks, Mischelle Pinnelle, Melynda Frederick, Sheri Nuckels, Mike Horst, Jason Cary, Josh Cary, Jason White, Christopher White, Jeremy White, Ashley Coffman and Lauren Stoffers; great-grandchildren, Tiffany Gossett, Beth Owens, Jordon Hennessy, Leah Hennessy, Brooke Owens, Tristen Ball, Sammi Ball, Lindsey Sparks, Cierra Ball, Tanner Sparks, Heith Pinnelle, Rachel Seals, Brody Frederick, Brooke Frederick, Bryce Nuckels, Ruthanne Nuckels, Sam Holland, Tony Holland, Kyler Kennedy, Kylie Horst, Logan White and two on the way; great-great-grandchildren, Savannah Gossett, Kobe Hennessey, Summer Hennessey, Trevan Popperawell, Leda Pinnelle, Nike Pinnelle, Chandler Seals, Ayden Seals and one on the way.Kenny was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kenneth "Skipper" Charley; four brothers, Martin, Leo, Byron and Ronald Charley; sister, Leona DeSchamp and great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Nuckels and Chloe Hennessy.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 13, at Oaktown United Methodist Church with Jim Beery officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway St. and from 10:00 until the service time at the church on Thursday.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wish Upon a Star or the Oaktown United Methodist Church.Online condolences may be sent through www.goodwinfamilyfh.com
