Louis Schultz

Louis W. "Bus" Schultz, 91, of Decker, IN, passed away June 19, 2014, at Good Samaritan Hospital Bus was born on June 30, 1922, in Decker, IN, to Louis and Emma (Moore) Schultz. They preceded him, as well as his wife, Newana Jane (Lane) Schultz; his long time companion, Dean Thomas; and four sisters, Mary Evelyn Schultz, Jessie Rae Bragan, Helen Louise Agee, and Louella Fae Daugherty. Surviving is his daughter, Toni Kay (Robert) Holmes of Vincennes; his granddaughter, Diane (Jon) Holmes Stepro of Sterling, VA; his grandson, Ethan (Morit) Holmes of Rockville, Maryland; his great-grandchildren, Belana Rose Stepro and Thomas Jefferson Holmes Stepro, both of Sterling, VA; the children of his companion, Dean Thomas, Deanna (Chris) Froman of Cincinnati, OH, Debbie (Paul) Skelton of Lakeland, FL, Leigh Thomas of Lakeland, Fl, Kim (Randy) Gatewood, of Evansville, IN, and Dave (Donna) Thomas, of Marion, KY; his dogs, Sadie and Jake; and his cats, Fuzzball and Butterball. In 1940, Bus graduated from Decker High School. In 1942, he began his term of service in the Army Air Corps. In World War II, Bus served as a propeller mechanic in Hawaii. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. For over 50 years, Bus drove a truck. He began his driving career by taking the farm truck to market for his father. During Bus's youth, the family drove the truck to New York every fall to pack and ship apples. His childhood dog, Dash, accompanied the family on these trips. In the early 1960's, Bus owned his own trucks, and he drove for several trucking companies, eventually retiring from Signal Delivery Service in Evansville. On occasion, Bus delivered popcorn for Orville Redenbacher when Redenbacher lived in Gibson County, IN. Bus served as a member of the Decker Town Board for over 40 years, serving as president and supervising the Decker Water Department. For his service, the current board declared him a lifetime citizen of Decker. He also served as a member of the Knox County Area Plan Commission, and the Southern Indiana Development Commission, each for 13 years. He was a member of the Decker United Methodist Church, where he was baptized as an infant. He was a lifelong Knox County Democrat, and proud to serve his community. Visitation for Bus will be held Sunday, June 22, from 2:00 - 6:00 EDT, at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway, Vincennes, IN. The funeral will take place on Monday, at the funeral home, beginning at 10:30 a.m. EDT. A religious service will be performed by Ray Tromley. Pallbearers include Dave Thomas, Larry Agee, Dennis Shelton, Richard Lane, Ethan Holmes, and Diane Stepro. Joel "Tip" Agee, Max Steimel, Dick Cardinal, Joseph Hume, Walter Joe Primus, Doris Ann Davis, and Sherman Carver will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Vincennes Animal Shelter, the Knox County Humane Society, the Terre Haute chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, or the Good Samaritan Hospital Hospice.
