Margie Thomas

Margie Grace (Fleetwood) Thomas, 91, passed away at 5:06pm on April 21, 2023, at The Villages of Oakridge in Washington, with her family by her side. Margie was born on August 2, 1931 in Washington, IN and was the daughter of Clarence and Hazel (Collins-Kendall) Fleetwood. She married William Thomas on October 11, 1953. Margie was a 1949 graduate of Washington High School. After graduation, she worked for Ralph Smith who was the truant officer for Washington schools. She then went to work at the courthouse for various offices until 1958 when she decided to be a stay at home mom. She later returned to the courthouse in 1976, where she worked until her retirement. Margie was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church; 50th year member of Beta Sigma Phi; member of Eastern Star; and she spent countless hours serving as room mother, swim team parent, and working the polls for election day. Survivors include her children, daughter Paula Potts and her husband Tony of Washington, IN; son Michael Thomas and his wife Linda of Tampa, FL; daughter Julie O'Brian and her husband Ken of Naples, FL; and daughter Carol Southerland and her husband Stuart of Montgomery, IN. Margie is survived by nine grandchildren, Garrett Thomas, Aimee Cuffle, Jonathan Potts, Patrick Potts, Sarah Wilcher, Olivia Grasso, Anna O'Brian, Sam Southerland, and Megan O'Brian. She also has seven great grandchildren, and one due in September. Margie is also survived by one sister, Shirley Perkins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her brothers Dale, Paul, Richard, and Donald Fleetwood, and her sisters Doris Armes, and Lois Stevens, plus three siblings who died in infancy. Visitation for Margie will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023, from 4:00 - 7:00pm at Goodwin Sievers Funeral Home, 2020 State St., Washington, IN 47501. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at 1:00pm at the funeral home with Pastor Byron Holtsclaw officiating. Following the service, Margie will be laid to rest at Sugarland Memory Gardens in Washington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions please be made to the Daviess County Historical Society or the First Christian Church.
