Marjorie Land

September 28, 1928 — November 10, 2019

Marjorie "Marje" (Nightingale) Land passed peacefully away on November 10, 2019 while with her family. She was a daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, wife, sister-in-law, mother, grandmother, mamaw, great-grandmother, colleague, friend, pet owner, church member, and neighbor.Marje was married to Donald Gene Land in 1946 in Morganfield, Kentucky. Donald was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European theater. Together they had three sons and shared a deep love. After her husband passed away in 1961, Marje was a single mother who went on to obtain her Master's degree at Indiana State University, commuting from Vincennes to Terre Haute to accomplish this goal. Majoring in Education and Minoring in History, she ultimately became a Professor of English at Vincennes University in 1971. She taught at VU for 24 years, received the Blue and Gold Cord Award in 1995, and was a Professor Emeritus after retiring. Additionally, she was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA) and a member of the Delta Kappa Chapter of the Sigma Tau Delta National English Honor Society.A descendant of Florence Nightingale, Marje was smart, determined, and committed to that in which she believed. Those that knew Marje well were familiar with her love for dogs, a good shopping trip, black coffee, and her passion for appropriate usage of grammar. She was an avid reader, often forgoing sleep to start or finish a book, read and research articles on the internet, or write. Never one to shy from technology, Marje purchased her first iPhone at 87 years young and worked to learn and use it, frequently texting family members and sometimes using invisible ink to do so.Music was a prominent part of her world. Not only did she excel at piano and organ, but she also taught the art to others. She was adamant about music being happy and would steer people to hymns that reflected that emotion, reminding people that the Bible said it was a "joyful noise" that we were to make. Should a hymn or piece not sound right to her, she would simply rework it, often jotting notes down on the sheet music, or just rewriting it herself. Any time she was near a piano, her family could ask her to play Boogie Woogie Blues, and she would stretch her fingers and play flawlessly, smiling the entire time. She would often play piano or organ for different churches when asked to do so. Additionally, she was a lifelong member of Southside Presbyterian Church.Meeting her in Heaven are many family members and friends. Her husband, Donald Gene, has welcomed her Home. She also joins her parents, Hazel (Williams) and Richard Nightingale, brothers James "Jimmy", and Eugene "Gene" along with her sisters, Lois (Bob) Doll, and Mary (Bill) Nunley. She also joins her son, Daniel Joe (Dianne) Land.Surviving her are her sons David Land (Eilene Coggins) of Virginia and Patrick Land of Vincennes, and her brother Jerry (Linda) Nightingale of Vincennes. She is also survived by her two granddaughters Tammy (Land) Besserer (Robert) of Sterling, Virginia and Charity (Land) Hudson (Bryan) of Martinsville, Indiana, and four great grandchildren.
