Marjorie "Margie" Cain

May 21, 1934 — July 6, 2015

She has been called "Mammy" by some, "Butch" by her father, "Mom" by three boys, "Grandma" by many. But she was called "Friend" by everyone who ever knew her. Marjorie Ann Cain, 81, passed away Monday evening July 6, 2015 at Good Samaritan Hospital with her son, Michael, her granddaughter Amber Neeley and her daughter-in-law Deb Reynolds by her side. Margie was born May 21, 1934 to Charles and LaVaughn Edwards of Vincennes where she attended Lincoln High School and later studied at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. In July of 1953 she was swept off her feet by a dashing young fellow named Joe Cain who took her to Oceanside, California to begin their new life while he served in the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton in San Diego. While in California, Margie took a job as a telephone operator in a nearby town and it wasn't long before their small home got smaller with the birth of her first son, Michael a year later. When Joe's service ended, they moved their small family back to Vincennes where they set up house at 2 West Sycamore Street, a home where they also saw the birth of another son, Jim Cain, and another boy, Bob Cain. While living in Vincennes, Margie spent her early years as a telephone operator, later taking a job working for the late Maurice Weadle as a portrait photographer on Main Street. Over the years she had worked at Big Jay's, WT Grant's and other places until she took a job at Reynolds Spring (later called Johnson Controls) where she retired when the factory closed. After that, at age 68, she landed a job at Vincennes Industrial Supply in Vincennes working in the receiving department. While she was always appreciative of her factory job she expressed many times that working at Industrial Supply was her true "dream job." Her fellow employees loved her and teased her and "kept her in the loop" so much that she could hardly wait to go back into work during her time there. Margie loved the outdoors and she and Joe spent many summers camping with neighbors and friends at Lincoln State Park and other campgrounds in southern Indiana. Because of their mutual love for fishing, they bought a cabin on the Wabash River near the old ferry crossing across from St. Francisville, IL. They were well known for their fish fries, BBQ and soup parties (affectionately called her "pot parties.") While there, they befriended many colorful and loving friends who have faithfully checked in on her up to the time of her departure. Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Joe and her two sons Jim of Vincennes and Bob of Lakeland Fla. She is survived by her son, Mike, of Vincennes and his wife, Deb Reynolds; a sister, Carol (Edwards) McEwen and her husband Jerry of Arlington, Va.; grandchildren Samuel Cain of Indianapolis, Amber Neeley and her husband Larry of Oblong, Il., Jonas Cain of Lakeland Florida and Abbey Cain also of Lakeland; several loving great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a faithful companion, Doyle Sullivan, Washington, whom for the past several years she never was able to beat at gin rummy, but who lovingly kept her company in a time when she most needed it. Funeral services for Margie will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 10, 2015 at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway with Robin Overbey officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit with Margie's family on Thursday from 4-8 pm.
