Martha Coomer

Martha LaVaughn Coomer, 102, of Vincennes, Indiana, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025, with her beloved sister by her side. Born on June 15,1922, in Illinois, Martha was the daughter of Theodore and Estella (Allee) Konton. Martha lived a very full life marked with Christ’s love, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to her faith and community.

Martha was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School in 1940 and enjoyed years of fellowship with other alumni participating in gatherings and parades. After retiring from Commercial Credit Corporation after 30 years, she continued to serve her community through working at the Health and Nutrition Center, Knox County Treasurer's Office, and Community United Methodist Church.

A charter member of the American Business Women's Association, Vincennes Chapter, Martha exemplified leadership and community spirit, inspiring many young women in business. While she received accolades for her roles, it was Martha’s faith that provided the cornerstone of her life. She was a devoted member of the Vincennes Free Methodist Church since October 1963 and as a Sunday school teacher influenced generations to come.

In 1941, Martha married her beloved husband, Joseph Coomer. They shared a beautiful life together until his passing in 1963. Caring for her loved ones was her life’s privilege and spending time with family and friends gave her tremendous joy.

Martha will be remembered for her genuine warmth, kindness, and deep connection she shared with everyone she encountered. A friend for life, she committed to staying in contact with friends and loved ones, humbly encouraging their spiritual journeys. As a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Martha has sown the fruit of love and compassion that will leave a legacy forever cherished by those who were privileged to know her.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Hacke; sister, Mary Sherman; and granddaughter, Kristin Suellentrop and her husband Randy. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Coomer; parents, Theodore and Estella Konton; and nephew, Jeffery Arensmann.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Vincennes Free Methodist Church at noon, with a luncheon to follow. Friends and family are welcome to arrive at the church beginning at 10am to celebrate Martha. There will be no burial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Free Methodist Church, PO Box 134, Vincennes, Indiana 47591 in Martha's honor. Goodwin-Sievers is honored to be entrusted with the care of Martha.
