Mary Lou (Hauhe) Laakman peacefully passed away January 3, 2014 at the Edward M. Poe Hospice Care Center in Titusville, Florida with her daughters by her side. Mary Lou was very active in her community. She often remarked that she was a professional volunteer. If a group needed help, Mary Lou was there. She earned several awards for her countless hours of volunteering with RSVP, Red Cross Blood Mobile and Hospital volunteer, Loaves and Fishes, Kids Read, Each One Teach One, Log Cabin Visitors Center, Southwestern Indiana Regional Youth village and the AIDS Resource Committee. She served as a member and officers on numerous boards.She served her churches, St. John's United Church of Christ and First Baptist of Vincennes. She taught both children and adult Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and sang in the choir. She was active in Women's Guild, Circle, Missionary Society and Church Women United.Mary Lou drove countless miles to lessons and practices, sewed yards of material into costumes and dresses and spent hours applauding in bleachers and theaters. She was a devoted mother to her family and their friends. She enjoyed being a room mother for 20 plus years at Hutton School. Mary Lou was a 4H leader on Allison Prairie and a member of the Sand Ridge Home Extension Club. In 1999, she was a fifty year member of the Delta Theta Tau Sorority.In 1984, Mary Lou graduated from Vincennes University with Highest Distinction with an Associate of Science Degree in Behavioral Science and Sociology. She was a Family Planning Educator for Walsh Valley Health and Community Services for several years until her retirement. Born on August 4, 1927 in Vincennes, Indiana to Harold (Nick) and( Edna) Louise Hauhe. She was preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and husband, Farris Owen Laakman. She was also preceded in death by her parents her son Bruce Owen Laakman. Survivors include son, David Laakman, daughters, Beth Laakman-Schaumburg (Brian Schaumburg) and Amy Laakman, Grandchildren Scott Laakman, Meredith Husnik (Alex) and Joel Schaumburg, sister, Carolyn Osterhage (Thomas) and numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Friends and family remember her as a truly unique individual. Funeral services for Mary Lou will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday January 10, 2015 at Goodwin Funeral Home with Rev. George Varns officiating. Burial will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the service time.
