Mary Marie McCormick Gardner Stone, 99, of Vincennes, formerly of Monroe City, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 8, 2020.She was born July 9, 1920 in Knox County, Indiana to Edward and Bernice (Hinkle) McCormick.Mary was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Monroe City, Eastern Star, and was a 1938 graduate of Monroe City High School. She retired as Postmaster of the Monroe City Post Office in 1979 where she started in 1949. Mary was still playing the piano at church at 94 years old and often said when life is hard you just go on and do the best you can.Surviving are her children Dan Gardner and his wife Martha Ann of Monroe City, and David Gardner and his wife Martha Jo of Monroe City; seven grandchildren, Heath Gardner, Shawn Gardner, Chris Gardner, Brian Gardner, Rusty Gardner, Jimmie Gardner, and Michaela Gardner; along with several great grandchildren.Preceding her in death were her parents; her first husband Charles Gardner who was killed in 1948, her second husband James L. Stone; and a son Mike Gardner.Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Thursday, March 12, 2020 at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home, 524 Broadway, Vincennes with Rev. Dave Parman officiating. Burial will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church or the Monroe City Blue Jean Center.
