Melba Jean Dawson, 77, of Washington, IN passed away December 11, 2024. She was born in Maynard, AR on August 26, 1947, to the late Raymond and Mary (Allen) Shepherd. Melba attended Washington High School and was a member of the marching band. She graduated in 1965 and continued her education at Vincennes University, where she graduated in 1966 with an associate's degree in cosmetology. Melba married, the love of her life, Bill Dawson on March 19, 1966. She was a member of the Church of Christ and would often teach Sunday school. Through her church, Melba became a sponsor of Compassion Children. She proudly sponsored 5 children over 20 years and visited 2 of them in Guatamala. Melba worked for CASA for 10 years and with group homes for 5 years caring for all different individuals and families.
In her early years, she enjoyed being in a bowling league with Bill. She also enjoyed fishing, playing tennis, white water rafting, hot air balloon rides, singing, playing piano and guitar, and traveling. Melba loved singing so much that her childhood dream was to become a professional singer. She was an instructor of BAT to Washington Community School's 4th graders. Melba proudly achieved a first degree black belt in Taekwondo. But her truest passion was being a servant and giver and even through her passing still was able to give the greatest gift of organ donation to help others. Melba will be deeply missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Mary Shepherd; and brother-in-law Ken Eide.
Melba is survived by her husband, of 58 years, Bill Dawson; son Tony (Michelle) Dawson; step grandchildren Spencer Hinkle and Vincent (Meaghan) Hinkle; siblings Rita Eide and Sheila (Mark) Petty; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Goodwin-Sievers is honored to be entrusted with the care of Mrs. Dawson. Visitation will be held December 14, 2024, from 1-3 pm at the Church of Christ. A Celebration of Life will begin at 3 pm at the Church of Christ, 311 Hillside Dr., on December 14, 2024.
