It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Melvin Arthur Smith, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who entered eternal rest on December 27, 2024, at the age of 85 surrounded by his family. Melvin was born on June 11, 1939, in Lyford, Indiana and is the son of Elias and Dorothy Smith. He spent a life devoted to his family, his community, and the work he loved.
Melvin was married to his cherished wife, Linda, in 1962, a partnership that blossomed over the years into a deep and unwavering love. Together, they created a warm and welcoming home for their family, including their beloved daughter, Cynthia Shideler and son, Jim Smith. Melvin's kind nature and gentle spirit defined his role as a husband and father, and he took great joy in being surrounded by his family.
A dedicated member of the Community Church of Vincennes, Melvin donated his time generously, serving his community with the same love and compassion he showed to his own family. He was a familiar face at church events and a steadfast supporter of those in need, often mowing lawns for neighbors who needed a helping hand.
Melvin's passion for sports, particularly his admiration for the South Knox Girls Basketball team, brought him much happiness. He was overjoyed when the team honored him at his last birthday celebration by presenting him with a signed game day ball, a gesture he treasured deeply.
Surviving Melvin is his wife, Linda (Greentree) Smith, children, Cindy Shideler (Mike) and Jim Smith; grandchildren, Dustin Smith, Jordan Smith, and Kylie Chapman; great grandchild, Bryleigh Chapman; siblings, David Smith, Sarah Avrey, Betty Frisz, Linda Lou Santos, and Wanda Rogers. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, Elias and Dorothy Smith; and sisters, Donna Thorne and Mary Jane Russell.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Community Church of Vincennes from noon until the service time of 1:00 pm. A dinner will served will be served at the church afterwards.
Melvin's memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. His kindness, laughter, and unwavering support will be profoundly missed. The compassion he showed toward others is a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
