Nellie Snyder

February 4, 1919 — March 10, 2013

Nellie L. Snyder, 94, of Vincennes, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, at BridgePointe Health Campus Assisted Living. Born Feb. 4, 1919, in Vincennes, she was the daughter of Roscoe Claude and Anna Evangeline (Hess) Westfall. Nellie was preceded by her parents; her first husband, Omer Edwin Howerton, whom she wed on June 9, 1938, and he passed away on July 3, 1955; and her second husband, Edward Annual Snyder, they were married Dec. 29, 1956, and he passed away on Nov. 29, 1979; sons, Jerry Thomas Howerton, who passed away as an infant, and John Howerton; brothers, Bennie Fred and James Roscoe Westfall; a sister, Margie Vories; and a daughter-in-law, Maxine Lucille Howerton. Nellie graduated from Monroe City High School in 1936. She worked at Brown Shoe Factory, and then worked at Hamilton Glass for 29 years before retiring. Active in the Democratic Party, she served as a precinct committeewoman for many years. Her life memberships included Glaziers and Glass Workers Union Local 1165 and the American Legion Post 73 Ladies Auxillary. Nellie loved to travel on cruises, and take bus trips. An avid fan of Lincoln High School Basketball, she was a member of the Lincoln Athletic Boosters Club. An active member of Bethany Presbyterian Church since 1937, she belonged to the Bethany Women's Group, serving as secretary for many years. Nellie was also a member of the Sojourner's Class at the Central Church of Christ. Surviving is her son, Larry Omer (Patricia) Howerton of Vincennes; her daughters, Ramona Sue (George) Campton of McCordsville, IN, and Linda Joan (James) Wilson of Bossier City, LA; eleven grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Lee Hayden of Verne, IN; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted by Rev. John DeSanto and Roger Wright on Wednesday, at 2:00, at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4:00
