Orison Scribner Smith Ill , better known as John, 90, passed away December 18, 2024.

He was born December 18, 1934 to the late Edgar Smith and Dorothy (Bass) Ward

in Vincennes, In. He attended Sacred Heart School, Lincoln and later graduated from

Hutsonville High School in Illinois. On Oct. 30, 1954 John married Marilyn (Martindale)

Smith of Monroe City. He enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Hanau,

Germany where he became a Diesel Engine repair Instructor. Upon his return to the States,

he went to work and eventually retired from NCR Corp. as a Computer Repair Technician.

He later worked part time along side his son at Smith Electric. John was an amazing

woodworker in his spare time. He also enjoyed playing golf, reading, mushroom hunting

and watching baseball. John and Marilyn were fortunate to celebrate 70 years of marriage

together. Family was very important to him and he showed this by being an exceptional

husband, father and grandfather. He was smart, kind and had a great sense of humor.

John will be missed and fondly remembered by so many. He was preceded in death by his

Parents, a sister, Mary Adah, a brother, Roger, a daughter, Teri and a grandson, Mason. He is

survived by his wife Marilyn and their children; Emily Bartley of North Carolina, Marty

Smith and his wife Pam of Monroe City, Jerry Smith and his wife Denise of Monroe City,

Jason Smith and his wife Kathy of Terre Haute, Bobbi Alvis and her husband Brett of Monroe

City, 12 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. There will be a graveside service at 2:00 pm

Monday Dec. 23, at Memorial Park Cemetery to honor his remarkable life.
