Patricia Cardinal

Patricia Ann Cardinal, 80, of Vincennes, died on Oct. 17, 2012, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 6, 1932, in Knox County, to Oath and Rachael (Hogue) Smith. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School, class of 1950, and had worked as an operator at Bell Telephone. Patty married Lawrence E. "Pooch" Cardinal on Sept. 25, 1954 in St. John's Catholic Church. They recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in the home that they shared their entire married life. A farmer's wife and homemaker, Patty also worked at the South Knox cafeteria in Monroe City. She was a member of St. Anne's Altar Society and the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxillary. Surviving is her husband; sons, Ed (Susie) Cardinal of Monroe City, and Ron (Amy) Cardinal of Vincennes; grandsons, Ryan (Jenny) Cardinal of Indianapolis, IN, Larry Cardinal of Nashville, TN, Aaron (Tara) Cardinal of Vincennes, and Jordan Cardinal of Monroe City. At the passing of her sister-in-law, Barbara Roellgen Cardinal, Patty became mom to Susan Boyles of Bruceville, Kathy Horrall of Vincennes, Janet Devine of Monroe City, and Patrick "Sam" Cardinal of Vincennes, blending both families until cousins became brothers and sisters. Patty enjoyed being "Aunt Pat' to their children as well. Also surviving are nieces Barbara Strange of Lawrenceville, IL, Virgetta Phipps of Vincennes, and Martha Nickless of Vincennes; nephews Bill Cox of Vincennes, and Steve Boatman of Bridgeport, IL; brother-in-law, Richard J. Cardinal of Vincennes; and sister-in-law Dorothy Smith of Terre Haute. Patty is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Juanita Cox and Betty Boatman; three brothers, Richard Smith, Kenneth "Bud" Smith, and Carl Smith; and the most special angel, daughter Sara Jo Cardinal. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 20th, at St John the Baptist Catholic Church at 10:00 am. Visitation will be at the Goodwin Funeral Home from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday. Burial will be in St. Vincent Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Vincent Cemetery Fund, or Southern Care Hospice of Evansville.
