Phillip G. Powell, 94, formerly of Wheatland, passed away at The West Minister Villages, Terre Haute, at 11:00 a.m. Saturday June 14, 2014 at his residence.He was born on February 14, 1920 in Lawrence County to Clinton A. and Lela M. (Newell) Powell.Phil received his education from Fritchton High School graduating in 1938, Vincennes University in 1940, a Bachelors Degree from DePauw University in 1947, and his Master's degree from Indiana University in 1950.He was widely known throughout Knox County, Indiana, although today he was retired from farming, at one time he was an active leader in agriculture. He was a former president of the Knox County, Indiana Farmer's Union. In 1954, he served as the state treasurer for the Indiana Farmer's Union.He is also remembered as a musician, having taught music in both Lawrence and Knox County and had also served as a choir director and soloist in local churches.Phil was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Vincennes, the Homebuilder's Sunday School class, the Speedster's group, The Methodist men and the Chancel Choir.Surviving is his wife, Mary Christine (Hagemeier) Powell, whom he married on September 2, 1945 in Freelandville; his children, Alan Powell of Columbus, Indiana, Daniel (Linda) Powell of Carmel, Gary (Cindy) Powell of Vincennes, Shirley (Larry) Martin of Terre Haute, and Lou Ann (Steve) Shoaff of Evansville; a sister, Betty Croft of Franklin, NC; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday June 18, 2014 at Gardner Brockman Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the May Chapel Cemetery in Lawrence County. Friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until the service time Wednesday.
