Rex Elwood Humbaugh, 87, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2020, at the Villages of Oak Ridge in Washington.Rex was born July 13, 1932, the first child of Nelson William Frederick Humbaugh and Audrey Laveda (Sommers) Humbaugh in Whitefish Bay, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was descended from Daviess County (Indiana) Revolutionary War soldier Charles Kilgore, Jr., who fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain, North Carolina.Rex spent the war years as a child in Evanston, Illinois, and moved with his family to Washington, Indiana, in 1946 when his parents relocated back to their home county to purchase what was then known as the American Steam Laundry. He graduated from Washington High School with the Class of 1950 and attended Indiana University, where he was enrolled in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program. A Life Loyal Sig of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, he earned a degree from the Kelley School of Business in 1954.After graduation from college, Rex served in the United States Air Force. For his overseas tour of duty, he was stationed at Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska, which was then a U.S. territory. While working in Indianapolis following his discharge from the military with the rank of captain, he met Sarah Ann (Sally) Eckman of Warren, Indiana. They married on December 13, 1958 and were together for 60 years until her death in 2019.Rex and Sally moved to Washington in 1965, when he went into the laundry business with his father and brother. He was part owner and operator of the American Laundry for more than 30 years.In retirement, Rex obtained his pilot's license and volunteered with the Red Cross. A lifelong outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as reading. He was an excellent swimmer and ice skater. He and his wife developed their love of travel on their honeymoon to Switzerland, Italy and Spain. They enjoyed adventures to Venezuela, the Virgin Islands, Mexico and Russia, later in life.Rex was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church. He is survived by three sons and their families: Kraig Humbaugh of Georgetown, Kentucky, Peter and Stacey (Moore) Humbaugh and daughters Hillary and Halle of Haubstadt, Indiana, and Erich and Amy (Junius) Humbaugh of West Lafayette, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and a brother, Don N. Humbaugh.A private funeral service will be held Monday, May 18, 2020 at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home, 2020 State St. with Rev. Jerry Turner officiating. Rex will be laid to rest next to his wife Sally in Plainville Cemetery.
