Robert Bartlow

August 5, 1934 — March 31, 2013

Robert Slater Bartlow, a Vincennes resident, died Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013 in Ruskin, FL at the Sun City Hospice House. Bob was born August 5, 1934; in Indianapolis, IN and was the youngest of five siblings born to Ruth (Williams) and Slater Bartlow. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1952, attended Vincennes University for two years and transferred to Indiana University where he obtained his B.A. in Communications and Broadcasting. After graduation from I.U. he attended Boy Scouts of America Leadership School and worked for the Boy Scouts in Quincy, IL area as a Field Representative. From there he moved to State Farm Life Insurance Co. as a programmer trainee in Bloomington, IL. While training as a programmer, he achieved the L.O.M.A. and C.L.U. certifications. He met Edna Pauline Hendershott, who he married on September 4, 1959 at Second Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, IL, while working at State Farm. The couple remained with State Farm until 1965 when Western Reserve Life Insurance (later known as Pioneer Group) hired him has Treasurer. In 1969 he returned to his mid-western roots in Chicago, IL employed by Montgomery Ward and Co., as Treasurer and V.P. of Investments of their Signature Group. He stayed with the Signature Group until the recession of 1991 resulted in early retirement. Early retirement presented Bob with the opportunity to retire in Vincennes, which he loved. His retirement was devoted to serving First Presbyterian Church and others. He had a passion for collecting pre-cancelled stamps and traveling. His parents, two sisters and one brother preceded him in death. They were Ruth Bartlow (1987), Slater Bartlow (1950), Mary Alice Cairns (1997), Berta Maxine Romine (2004) and Esco Albert Bartlow (1999). His only surviving sibling, Janice Ruth Grigsby, resides in Bridgeport, IL. He also leaves six living nieces and three living nephews, Carol Romine, Margaret Rhee, Judy Kelly, Linda Romine, Susan Maas, Paula Fye, Richard Grigsby, Ronald Grigsby and Randy Grigsby. A "celebration of Life Service" will be held Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Goodwin Funeral Home. A one hour visitation with family will start at 1:00 pm. Online condolences to the family may be posted at www.goodwinfamilyfh.com. Donations in Bob's memory can be sent to Salvation Army, Church on the Street or any mission of your choice. Cremation took place in Florida and cremains placed in the Mausoleum at Memorial Park Cemetery in private by family members only.
