It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Roy Melvin Sloan, a devoted husband, respected educator, and beloved member of the Vincennes community. Born on August 17, 1947, in Princeton, IN, to the late Jedd & Clarabell (Williams) Sloan. Roy touched the lives of many during his 76 years on this earth.
Roy was a proud graduate of Patoka High School, where he was a valued member of the Class of 1965. Following his high school years, he continued his academic journey at the University of Texas in El Paso, TX, excelling in both academics and athletics on a baseball scholarship, ultimately earning his bachelor's degree.
After his time at the University of Texas, Roy selflessly served his country as a drill sergeant in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he furthered his education, obtaining a master's degree from Oakland City University.
Roy's dedication to education was evident throughout his career. In 1978, he began his tenure as a teacher in Vincennes, before assuming the role of Principal at North Knox West in 1980. For over three decades, Roy served as a pillar of strength and guidance to countless students, staff, and families within the North Knox community, eventually retiring in 2010 as the Principal of North Knox Central.
Outside of his professional life, Roy was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Vincennes, Elk Lodge #0291, and the American Legion Post #73. He found joy in hobbies such as golfing, riding motorcycles, and enthusiastically cheering on children at sporting events. Family was at the center of Roy's world, and he cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren.
Roy is survived by his loving wife, Susan (Mize/Hendrixson) Sloan of Vincennes, IN; his son, Dan (Lea Kelley) Sloan of Westfield, IN; his stepchildren, Paul (Andrea) Hendrixson of Cummings, GA, Matt (Shea) Hendrixson of Decker, IN, Jamie (Russell Adams) Hendrixson of Knoxville, TN; Amy Sloan of Bruceville; grandchildren, Dalton (Ashley) Sloan of Oaktown, IN, Will Sloan of Bruceville, IN, Audra (Tyler) Graber of Vincennes;his great-grandchildren, Berkley Sloan, Brealynn Hatfield and Brooks Graber; step-grandchildren, Sam Hendrixson of Cumming, GA, Cy Hendrixson of Decker, IN, Grace Hendrixson of Auburn, AL, Haley (Sam) Jester of Dawsonville, GA; his brother-in-laws, Richard Waldrop of Murfreesboro, TN, and Jim (Diane) Mize of Jacksonville, FL, and his sister-in-law, Judy (Bill) Holzer of Indianapolis, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jedd and Clarabell; and his siblings, Morris Ray Sloan, and Laura Lee (Sloan) McGeehan.
Visitation for Roy will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at First Baptist Church 2625 Wabash Ave., Vincennes, IN 47591, from 4:00-7:00pm. Following visitation, a memorial service will begin promptly at 7:00 with Dr. Darrel Bobe officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Roy M. Sloan Memorial Fund at Knox County Community Foundation to benefit the Isaiah 1:17 House in Knox County. Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home is honored and privileged to be entrusted with the care of Roy and his family.
