He was raised in Lawrenceville, IL, where he worked at the Dairy Queen during his teenage years and graduated from high school in 1959. On June 5, 1965, he married Emily Doades at the Lawrenceville First Church of God.He served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps from 1959
