Thelma E. Shappard, age 97, passed away at Good Samaritan hospital September 10, 2014 at 8:10 p.m. she died peacefully of natural causes.Thelma was born in Vincennes, IN August 27, 1917, daughter of Charles Adams and Ethel Jane (Duckworth) Adams. Thelma grew up in Vincennes where she enjoyed going to dances, roller skating, going to movies and working as a waitress. She was a spelling bee champion. In later years she would tell about going to Lincoln High School and the school dances, she enjoyed school but had to drop out to work.Thelma Lived a short time in Indianapolis with her husband Clarence "Speed" Shappard, where she worked at Mama Miller's Restaurant. She had many interesting stories about her experience at Miller's. After moving back to Vincennes she worked several years at the Brown Shoe Company and Stubnitz Spring Company. She also supplemented by working as a waitress. She believed in children getting an education and was very proud of her son Denny and her grandchildren graduating from college. After retiring from factory work, she started a babysitting business in her home which she enjoyed for three decades until her health made her give it up. She was very fond of all the children she cared for and kept in touch for years with them. She was known as Grandma Thelma to most people and "Nana" to her Family. Thelma was a member of St. John Catholic Church.Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; Husband Clarence Shappard of Vincennes; brother Alex Adams, Lawrenceville; sisters Charlet Atterson, Terre Haute; Mary Kearns, Indianapolis; Ethel Burris, Vincennes.Thelma is survived by one son Dennis Shappard; grandchildren Adam Shappard of Terre Haute and Angela Thompson of Oaktown, IN; great grandchildren; Caleb Shappard, Kari Shappard, Daniel Shappard and Zoey Thompson; neice; Mary Katherine Erney; great niece; Sheree Wright and great nephew Michael Stewart.Funeral services will be Monday September 15, 2014 at 11:00 am at Goodwin Funeral home with Reverend David Fleck officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00pm until 8:00pm Sunday September 14, and also from 9:30am until the service time Monday. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. John Catholic Church or Good Samaritan Hospice.
