Wallace Lynn "Wally" Dougherty passed away at 6:05 am on October 1, 2018 at his residence with his family by his side. Wally was born on April 23, 1941 in Plainville the son of Leonard "Pig" and Ava (Edwards) Dougherty.Wally graduated from Plainville High School in 1959 where he was captain of the baseball team and a member of the basketball team, marching band and vice president of FFA. He was a freshman on the 1956 Plainville Midget basketball sectional championship team and he was a teammate of Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer Lloyd Bateman. After attending Vincennes University Wally was employed at Plainville Mill, followed by being long time Parts Manager at OD Neff. In is youth he was a very successful go kart racer. He was also partner in Moody, Jones and Dougherty Performance Center, who campaigned an NHRA national record holding 69 Pontiac Firebird using Wally's modified carburetors. In 1978, he became owner/operator of Washington Auto Electric. He served and provided parts to the automotive community for over fifty years, retiring in 2017. He was secretary/treasurer of Dougherty Farms Inc. which was a recipient of the Hoosier Homestead award in 2012 recognizing their farm for being owned and maintained by the same family for 175 years (since 1837). He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Indiana University Basketball and followed all types of motorsports. Wally was also a member of the Moose, American Legion, VFW and the Eagles. He lived in Plainville his entire life, most of his adult years in the home built in 1948 by his grandparents, Clay and Mae Dougherty. Wally was also very knowledgeable about the history of the town and the people and enjoyed discussing Plainville.Survivors include sons, Gregory A. Dougherty, Doug Dougherty and his wife Angella of Washington; daughter, Dorinda Martin and husband Jerry of Washington; grandchildren, Scott Martin and his wife Hilary, Alyson Dougherty, Derek Dougherty; and great grandchildren, Kendall and Magnolia Martin; step grandchildren, Marilyn and Chris Stevens, Joseph and Ashley Miller, Donald "Bryan" Miller; step great grandchildren, Jonah Miller, Madison Miller, Mellady Miller, Makinlee Miller, Josiah Stevens, Myah Stevens, Micah Stevens and Titus Stevens; his beloved cat of sixteen years Patches; special friend Mickey Swanigan of Washington. Wally was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother James David Dougherty.Friends may visit with Wally's family from 4-8 pm on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home, 2020 State St. Wally's funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the funeral home with Tom Watson officiating.
