Dr. William C. von der Lieth, M.D., 91, of Vincennes, passed away at his home, on May 24, 2012. A surgeon, Dr. von der Lieth came to Vincennes in 1954, and practiced with Dr. Ewing until retiring in 1987, and was proud to have been a surgeon for 50 years. He was a member of the American Board of Surgery, a graduate of the Cornell Medical School, and served in the Army Medical Corps. Born June 22, 1920 in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of John F. and Mary (Gleeson) von der Lieth. His parents preceded him, as well as his first wife, Janice von der Lieth; his daughter, Wendy von der Lieth; a brother, Jack von der Lieth; and a sister, Mary Mahoney. Surviving are three daughters, Linda (Jim) Osborne of Vincennes, Kim (John) Bivens of Bruceville, IN, and Lisa (Dan) Reitmeyer of Vincennes; a son, Joseph (Jane) von der Lieth of Vincennes; his sister, Anne Ertle of Wall, NJ; a brother, Robert von der Lieth of New York, NY; grandchildren, Clay, Tabitha, Jarett, Max, Alex, Lee, and Rachel; and great-grandchildren, Audrey, Samantha, Cogan, and Kiara. Bill had a passion for life. Reading, storytelling, and spending time with people that he cared about enriched his life. He was an avid fisherman, sportsman, and historian, and loved the many travels he took with his wife, family and friends. A celebration of Dr. von der Lieth's life will be held on Thursday, June 14, at 6:00 pm at Blossom Hill (formerly Nesbitt Orchard) on Highway 61. Donations may be made to the Indiana Military Museum.
